I always enjoy Cynthia Glasby’s letters so much (And for the ladies..., May 21), but clearly, we have been watching very different football matches.

Where on earth has she seen footballers wearing “pretty pastel slippers” and “knickers” to play in – perhaps she has confused a football pitch with a ballet at Covent Garden? Footballers’ gear is totally practical, masculine and not at all sexy; sportsmen dress for the fray, not for the effect, as do sportswomen.

I often wonder how footballers can possibly be comfortable in the outfits and boots they wear, but their performance on the field is lively and entertaining, and though I do not understand all the rules of the game, I have to admire their skill, zeal and dedication. Unlike Cynthia, I do not hope they are played out of the World Cup, but are as successful as they deserve to be, with all the support they get from their devoted fans. However, I, too, prefer tennis and whoever he is playing against, I always want Roger Federer to win, as he really is very special. But I suppose I have to support Andy Murray, as he is the latest British hope in the game.
