A CHARITY is appealing for runners to take part in one of the biggest and most important dates in York’s calendar to help raise cash for adults with disabilities.

Healthcare charity Sue Ryder Care is calling for people in and around York to take part in the Run for All 10K on Sunday, August 1, set up in memory of sporting and fundraising legend Jane Tomlinson, who died in 2007 after battling cancer for 17 years and raising £1.85 million for cancer charities.

Locally, Sue Ryder provides long-term residential and respite care for up to 36 adults with a range of conditions including multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease stroke and brain injury.

Charity spokeswoman Lucy Nalton said: “Running for Sue Ryder Care in events like the York 10k is a great way to get fit and feel fantastic, as well as helping others, and it’s hard to beat that feeling of achievement when crossing that finish line.

“Enjoy stunning views of York Racecourse, York Minister and the River Ouse while getting fit and raising vital funds to help people with life limiting conditions all at the same time.

“With every step you will be helping people with life-limiting and long-term conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, a stroke, brain injury or cancer.”

The charity provides residential and respite care at Holme Hall, the charity’s neurological care centre in Holme-on- Spalding Moor.

Nationally, the charity provides four million hours of care each year and needs to raise £74 million annually to fund its work.

Lucy said: “Running for Sue Ryder Care is a great way to get fit and challenge yourself. In return, we will support you every step of the way, from sign-up to beyond that finishing line, with all the training and fundraising advice you need.”
