CITY of York Council has set the date when its executive will formally consider plans for a major new swimming pool and sports facility in east York.
The University of York and the council are working together to fund and build a sports village as part of the university’s new campus expansion at Heslington East.
Central to the £9 million development will be a competition-standard swimming pool. Detailed plans are being drawn up and will be consulted on before approval for planning and funding is sought.
Final go-ahead is subject to approval by both the university and the council.
The council’s executive will consider the proposals on July 6. The pool could be open from 6am until 10pm at night, for continuous community use. Plans were considered by a joint steering group earlier this week.
The new pool would be available for by both students and residents. The scheme would also include a learner pool, astro turf pitches and a gym. It would be sited next to the Grimston Bar Park&Ride and stops for the cross-city No 4 bus route.
