WHAT a joy it was to traverse the yellow brick road at Saturday’s matinee of the Wizard Of Oz, at York Theatre Royal!
Sheer magic from start to finish, from the orchestra, to the costumes, the colour was spectacular.
How hard the cast worked. With their many roles from farmers to the tin man, scarecrow, the lion, to dancers, the magnificent “crows” the “doorman” at Oz from “crow” and back again – his facial expressions are with me still – hilarious!
Dorothy, whose acting (not in the least rather “sweet”, as one critic claimed) was truly amazing.
She was totally unfazed by the enormity of her role. Rarely off stage, her acting and singing shone.
The munchkins also excelled making the whole production ever memorable, so well done and thank you to all concerned.
Well done too, to the Theatre Royal staff, who are always so kind and helpful and civil in all the excitement.

• Just returned from an unforgettable evening at the theatre to see a production of Le Tartuffe, at York Theatre Royal.
It was unforgettable, all right. An evening of unconstructed, self-serving, sneering unpleasantness, as far removed from Moliere’s funny, subtle comedy classic as you could imagine.
Added to that, ham acting whose only virtue was that half of the egregious dialogue could not be heard at all.
A waste of money and time and an insult to a great name.
Moliere, sleep on.
Tony Loffill, Holburns Croft, Heslington, York.
