I am probably writing on behalf of many frustrated motorists who use one of York’s busiest roads, Bootham.

All is usually fine until you get to around the area of St Peter’s School, because of the stupid filter light at the Bootham Bar junction.

The lights are at red, then the green right turn filter light comes on, but the front car wants to turn left, so we wait for the full green light before the traffic can move on.

The main green light then only lets a handful of cars through before the lights turn very quickly to red.

The other day I stood by the lights to observe how many cars went through if the front car was waiting to make that left turn.

It averaged about eight cars, usually the number of cars from the lights to the entrance to Bootham Row car park. The queue actually tailed back to Grosvenor Terrace or further.

The solution – get rid of the filter light and give us more time on green.

Just have the filter light if a pedestrian presses the button in Gillygate, or ask the man who watches the screen in the control room to switch the screen on so he is aware of traffic build-up.
