On paper at least, Jimmy Somerville’s set list looks really interesting. Hanging On The Telephone, People Are Strange and Motherless Child are great songs, and rarely covered. But gone is the edgy paranoia or sheer theatricality of glories past.
Likewise, unfortunately Somerville’s covers of Dusty’s I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, Patsy’s Walking After Midnight and My Heart Belongs To Daddy are rather workmanlike and sadly dull. Although Suddenly Last Summer is rather handsomely packaged including a bonus DVD, ageing BronskiBeat/Communard fans may do wise to avoid Suddenly Last Summer.
Although Erasure are still an on-going concern, Non-Stop is Andy Bell’s second solo album. Of course, in their time Erasure also delivered a covers set, Other People’s Songs, very similar to Somerville’s latest effort.
But Non-Stop consists purely of new songs. Well, actually both Running Out and Will You Be There have been around for a few months, but as the downloads were under the pseudonym of Mimo, they mostly escaped the radar of many Andy Bell fans. Interestingly, Perry Farrell from Jane’s Attraction duets on Honey If You Love Him.
Co-written and co-produced with Pascal Gabriel (S’Express, Ladyhawkes, Kylie and Little Boots) Non-Stop is a fabulously upbeat and joyful glam-beat collection. Although harder and clubbier than their pop hits, Non-Stop more than matches Erasure at their very best.
