Some of the recent letters to The Press receive a comment from council spokespersons. Yet it is somewhat suspicious that no comment is made when there was an appeal from P Lock asking who the Stray Masters are, and so the historic deal over York’s ancient common lands or Strays remains shrouded in mystery.
There must be some records which establish the legal position.
I should like to add my call to City of York Council to explain to Press readers the deal that was done with the Freemen in 1958 that gave them certain management rights in exchange for regular payments.
When property is let, there are generally terms in the tenancy stating what the tenant can or cannot do and usually subletting for profit is barred, as is licensing the premises.
How much exactly are these sums, who are they paid to, and have they kept pace with inflation or is the council hoping to “cash in” on the Strays in exchange for what possibly now equates to a peppercorn rent? Have the Freemen given up all rights of ownership or do they retain some control?
Please give us facts this time, City of York.

• It would seem Monk Stray is really under threat, and many of the residents in the surrounding area are blissfully unaware of City of York Council’s plans to hold all kinds of events there.
There is already an announcement of a massive armed forces day on July 3, to include marching bands, licensed bar, side shows and much more.
I have a number of questions regarding this.
How did the council manage to get permission from the Freemen of the City to use Monk Stray? Did the Freemen fully realise the impact this would have on the whole area? Can they now revoke their permission for any such use in the future?
How can there be a charge of £8 for adults, £20 for families, etc, to use this public open space?
How can they advertise a licensed bar when a meeting to discuss this and answer objections has not yet been held?
This is arranged for Monday, June 14, at 10am at the Guildhall.
Why have residents and other users of the Stray not been fully and openly informed of the plans? What other events has the council got under wraps for the future? The possibilities are endless and frightening.
Jean Frost, Woodlands Grove, York.
