RESIDENTS in York put their waste to good use by creating some weird and wonderful scarecrows this Bank Holiday.

A team of York residents in the Scarcroft Road area of the city organised a Green Scarecrow Festival to raise awareness of what local residents can do to tackle climate change.

The Scarcroft Scarecrow Festival took place this weekend with more than 30 households making their own green scarecrows from different recycled material.

The Scarcroft team is participating in the York Green Streets Challenge, a year-long campaign to get different communities in York to reduce their carbon footprint by ten per cent.

Vicky Hearson, festival organiser, said: “We have enjoyed forming a Green Team and thought the Scarecrow Festival would be a fun way of rising awareness of climate change issues and encouraging our neighbours to do their bit for the planet.”

Dr Gary Haq, York Green Street Challenge coordinator, said: “It is great to see such enthusiasm of the teams taking the York Green Street Challenge – not only to committing to reducing their carbon footprint but to spreading the message to their neighbours.”
