COUNCIL bosses in East Yorkshire are set to approve an extra £1.6 million to repair roads damaged by an increasing amount of traffic and two severe winters.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council approved an additional £650,000 for highways maintenance earlier this year to deal with the damage caused to roads by freezing conditions, and said at the time the release of further cash would be considered.
The authority’s cabinet will now be asked to rubber-stamp more money to allow materials to be ordered and work on a raft of repairs across the region to get under way before winter.
A report by the council’s director of corporate resources, Sue Lockwood, which will go before a meeting next week, said: “Safety inspections of the highways, undertaken in March, have shown a significant increase in the level of structural defects arising, which has led to a programme of maintenance which is beyond the scope of routine repair.”
