JOHN GLEDHILL, a former secretary manager of Fulford Golf Club and president of the York Union of Golf Clubs, has died in York after a long illness. He was 78.
Born in York, Gledhill went to Nunthorpe Grammar School before becoming a teacher at Carr Junior School. He later taught art and sport at Beckfield Secondary School before becoming co-ordinator of Adult Education at York College of Arts and Technology.
When he retired from teaching he was appointed the first full-time secretary manager at Fulford Golf Club, a post he held from 1986 to 1994.
He was a member of Heworth Golf Club for many years and was club captain in 1981, becoming York Union president in 1983.
Gledhill leaves his wife Jose, son Stephen and daughter Judi.
