The terms easy drinking, approachable and crowd pleasing appear in my wine notes from time to time. They mean pretty much the same thing but sometimes I’m left thinking how I would actually define an easy style of wine. And as drinking wine is supposed to be pleasure, shouldn’t all good examples be easy to drink?
I suppose there is an answer in an analogy with literature. There are deep, gripping novels that immerse the reader intensely and then there are the holiday reads that you can pick up and finish during a day spent on a sun-lounger. In my way of thinking, the classy and serious wines are the deep, gripping novels and the approachable, easy wines are the holiday books.
Given that this is a holiday weekend, my wine suggestions this week are all in the easy-drinking style. I hope it’s hot enough to enjoy them outside, on the sun-lounger.
Chilean brand Chilano has come up trumps again with its rosé, the 2008 was brilliant at the price and so is Chilano Merlot Rosé 2009. I love this wine because it is so utterly drinkable and matches with just about any food you throw at it. Apart from having the obligatory strawberry patch aromas, it’s fresh and generously fruity, think ripe raspberries and red cherries.
I’ve written about Flagstone Noon Gun 2009 before but it’s worth another mention.
This South African blend of chenin blanc, viognier and sauvignon blanc, is the sum of its parts, touting honey, lemon, orange peel, perfume and goosegog.
Other than at tastings, I rarely think of drinking reds without food of some sort but Canaletto Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2007 slips down easily on its own. It’s great with takeaway pizza too. Smooth and fruit driven, it has flavours of cherries, plums, a hint of smoke and some fine tannins.
