Selby’S sporting world could be set for a boost after a college unveiled plans for a new state-of-the-art football pitch.

A decision on whether the new artificial surface can be created in the grounds of Selby College is set to be made at the end of summer, with the aim being to open it up for local teams and as a base for community sport.

If approved, the third generation (3G) pitch, which would be laid at the Abbots Road site, would be accompanied by the arrival of a floodlighting set-up and new changing facilities, as well as a function room.

The college has submitted its plans to Selby District Council and, in the application, said: “The football pitch will be used by Selby College for team practice sessions and fixtures, and will also be used by local senior and junior football teams as well as for community use.”

The all-weather pitch would be open to stage matches and training activities between 9am and 10pm every day, with the building which is intended to house the function room being used for meetings up to midnight.

The college has also said the floodlights would be designed using anti-glare systems to avoid causing any nuisance to people living nearby, and has also outlined a string of security measures to stave off vandalism.

These will include adding more security lighting to the new building, and installing anti-vandal hinges on the floodlight columns, while the company which already guards the grounds will patrol the area.

Extra CCTV coverage is also expected to be put in place.

Residents living near the college site are being consulted on the proposals. Planners are expected to decide on the scheme at the end of August.
