I WAS saddened to read about the accident to the cyclist near to the Imphal Barracks and I share the concerns of local residents about the recent changes to the road layout.

A few minutes observation near the bus stop at Fulford Cross will quickly indicate the obvious dangers. Drivers of vehicles turning left into the Aldi/Iceland car park simply cut into the bus lane well before the junction, while those turning right hold up the traffic on the south-bound side and cut across as soon as a gap appears. I rarely cycle along that stretch, but next time I will dismount and walk along the footpath well before the north-bound bus stop.

There has been too much white paint applied based on office desk plans with insufficient consideration of vehicle user interpretation and behaviour.

• CHRISTMAS Day 1990, my mum and dad got me a great Scalextric set.

There was no greater fun than driving those cars along a track that went all over the place and included sections of road where cars could hit each other. I loved it.

But 20 years later, I get to feel the same effect in real life on Fulford Road. The new road layout is Scalextric to the extreme with cars, buses and bikes and weaving in and out of each other.

The worst section is around the Barracks and Iceland. The removal of the island to turn into Iceland has left the road blocked and very unsafe.

I can’t wait to see what a mess they will make of Blossom Street when they have three lanes down to two, just so the FTRs can make the corner. Maybe they should buy buses to fit the street, rather then making the street fit the bus.
