HOLDERS Acomb were dumped out of the CIU Bowls Evening League Knockout Cup at the preliminary round stage by Clarence.
The game was tied after 18 ends and newcomers Clarence won after each rink played an extra end, booking a first round tie against South Bank.
Poppleton Road WMC beat Tramways in the other preliminary tie and they will face Burton Lane in the first round.
Round 1 draw: Clarence v South Bank, Poppleton Road v Burton Lane, Huntington v Railway Institute, St Clement’s v Holgate. To be played on Tuesday, June 8.
Meanwhile, Burnholme lead the way in the Sunday Morning Scoop Shop Acomb Bowls Triples League after a 17-16 victory over Poppleton Road WMC ‘A’.
The sides were level at 16-16 going into the last end, but Burnholme managed to edge to victory.
They lead by a point from Clifton, who clinched their third win in three outings by beating Acomb WMC 16-13.
Third-placed Railway Corinthians were 21-5 victors over Acomb WMC, while Poppleton Road WMC ‘A’ beat West Park Windmills 17-15 to claim fourth in the table.
West Park also lost to Poppleton Road WMC ‘B’ 18-13.
In the other fixture, Poppy Road ‘B’ went down 17-14 to Burnholme.
A joint team from Bedale and Norton bowls clubs won the annual Bank Holiday ‘Whistle Stop’ tournament at Wycar, Bedale.
A field of 80 bowlers took part, with the first prize taken by Jean Bush, Tony Wells, Fred Wood and Audrey Wood.
Hundens Bowls Club, in Darlington, came second, and third place went to Hutton Rudby Bowls Club.
In the Yorkshire Two-Wood Bowls Singles (Zone 4), Paul Humphreys and Michael Bruce are the two York qualifiers for the quarter-finals.
Humphreys beat M Goodall 21-8 and then triumphed 21-16 over David Newsome to reach the last eight, while Bruce was a 21-9 winner over Steve Daly and a 21-6 victor over Tex Stevens.
Elsewhere, Yorkshire County Bowling Association’s Middleton Cup campaign for 2010 gets underway at Dunnington Bowling Club this Saturday when they take on rivals Derbyshire at the Common Road green, the game starting at 2pm.
Yorkshire, who reached the final of this competition last year, will be keen to make a winning start to the group stage with away games against Lancashire and Northumberland to come.
The York region will be represented by Phil Parsons, John Walker and Phil Emmerson (Holgate) and Mike Bruce and Paul Humphreys (York RI Amateurs).
In other Yorkshire CBA news, the York region will be represented at the quarter-finals of the 2 Wood Singles in June by Bruce and Humphreys, who qualified with wins against Tex Stevens (Selby) and David Newsome (North Duffield) last Sunday.

FORMER county junior outdoor bowling champion Hollie Arundel is on the trophy trail on indoor rinks. Arundel, a pupil at Selby College, has been bowling for four years and is pictured above with the Selby Indoor Bowling Club’s junior championship trophy.
