A CYCLIST remains in a critical condition tonight, a week on from the accident in York which left her with serious head injuries.

Police have renewed their appeals for information about last Thursday’s accident outside Imphal Barracks in Fulford Road, amid continuing speculation that new bus lanes painted on the road may have been a factor.

Several readers have claimed on The Press' website that the lanes have caused confusion and created dangers for road users, echoing claims by local resident Gary Aveyard that the changes had created an “inherent danger” on Fulford Road.

Asked whether police were examining the bus lanes as part of their inquiries, Traffic Sergeant Julian Pearson, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are investigating all of the factors that may have contributed to the incident.”

The accident happened at about 5.25pm when the 40-year-old cyclist left the barracks on Fulford Road and was turning right towards the city.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the woman remained in a critical condition at Leeds General Infirmary.

He said officers particularly wanted to speak with the drivers of five cars who were travelling eastbound along Fulford Road and may have seen the cyclist just prior to the collision.

“The cars were following each other in the following sequence: a green Seat Alhambra, a silver BMW 3 series, a Peugeot 307, a Ford Ka and a blue Vauxhall Zafira,” he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have information which could help trace any of the drivers of the vehicles travelling along Fulford road at the time of the collision is asked to contact Traffic Sergeant Julian Pearson on 0845 6060 247 quoting reference number 12100085300.
