TOURISTS gathered to watch when a delivery van got stuck in a hole that opened up in the road outside a York hotel.
Half the vehicle’s right-hand front tyre became submerged when the asphalt gave way while it was pulling out from the roadside the Hilton Hotel, close to Clifford’s Tower.
The driver said: “It was as though the truck was sinking. At first I thought the tyre was flat.”
But after checking he realised the tyre had “half disappeared.” The hole opened up as the van drove over it, making it impossible for the driver to drive on.
The van was stuck for almost an hour yesterday afternoon, while a recovery vehicle hauled the vehicle back to level ground.
City of York Council said it was investigating the incident.
