IT WAS heartening to see so many people in St Sampson’s Square on Monday protesting about the Israeli government’s attack on an unarmed aid flotilla in international waters.

It now seems at least 19 people were killed in this terrifying, illegal and unwarranted military operation.

People in York, in Britain and the world over have been shocked and upset at the action.

Like the Viva Palestina convoy – which so many people in York supported – the group of ships was carrying cement, medical supplies and all manner of much-needed goods to Gaza, despite the illegal blockade of the territory by the Israeli government.

The mission was peaceful. The reaction of the Israeli government is despicable and I can only hope governments across the world put pressure on Israel to comply with international law.

My only fear is it’s going to take many more spontaneous protests, letters, and much more lobbying to ensure that our own government holds Israel to account.

At least by co-ordinating these protests we can ensure our voices are heard and our solidarity is felt.

And even if our government fails us, we still have the power of boycott.
