THE thoughts of the people of York are with Trooper Ashley David Smith’s parents, the city’s Lord Mayor has said.
Coun Sue Galloway, who is also one of the councillors for the Westfield area, where the family live, said: “I was saddened to learn of Ashley’s death. When someone who is part of our close knit York community is affected, then the real human cost of war strikes home.
“On behalf of the people of York I extend our condolences to Mr and Mrs Smith and Ashley’s other relatives and friends. Our thoughts will be with them at a very difficult time.
“We are all proud of our armed forces and the job that they do. I pray that the conflict will be over soon and that news like this will not be repeated.”
Trooper Smith's body is to be repatriated to Wooton Basset in Wiltshire on Wednesday. His funeral service will be held at York Minster, at a date yet to be confirmed.
