THE Deputy Prime Minister has made a big thing of the alternative voting system, and that the coalition Government will hold a referendum on electoral reform sometime in 2011. Personally, I could not care less. AVS is not what the Lib Dems really wanted. It is a sop by the Tories to try and keep harmony in the camp.
I would favour true proportional representation as our new voting system. My party would have a chance of winning seats under that system, but David Cameron will never allow proportional reform and nor will Labour.
I wanted real political reform – an end to expenses scandals, an elected second chamber, MPs only having one job while an MP, no more sleaze and corruption, lies and deceit.
That is what I understand as political reform, not AVS.
I would be surprised if most UK voters either understand AVS or want it or care about it.
