INTERNATIONAL bowlers are heading for the city as York RI host the Bowls England Champion of Champions Singles regional finals on Sunday.

The event has attracted England aces Mark Dawes and Amy Monkhouse, who is the reigning Women’s Champion of Champions.

The field includes two Yorkshire players, plus two from Cumbria, one from Derbyshire, four from Durham, two from Lancashire, three from Lincolnshire and two from Northumberland.

The regional finals get under way at 10am, with further matches starting at about 2pm and 4pm.

The winners of the men’s and women’s events will qualify for the latter stages to be played at Worthing in August.

• West Park Windmills beat high-flying Clifton to notch their third win in the Scoop Shop Acomb Sunday Triples Bowls League.

After a slow start, West Park – the only team pick up all of their bonus points – have moved to within five points of league leaders Railway Corinthians.

Poppleton Road WMC ‘A’ dropped a seven on the 17th end to go 19-16 down against Acomb WMC, but came back with a four on the last end to win 20-19.

With four games remaining, the title race is wide open.

• Giant-killing Huntington overturned much-fancied Clarence to book their place in the final of the York CIU Bowls Evening League Knockout Cup.

Huntington won 61-49 to book a final date with Holgate, who toppled Poppleton Road 53-33 in the other semi-final.

The final will be held at Railway Institute Bowling Green, in Ashton Lane, York, on Tuesday, July 13, at 7pm.

Meanwhile, the draws have been made for a host of CIU competitions.
