Updated: THIS year’s design for York’s Maize Maze is expected to really take off with visitors.
Farmer Tom Pearcy has created a picture of a giant Spitfire in his 45-acre fields. The design measures more than 300m, making it the world’s largest Spitfire.
The design was chosen to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Former Flight Lieutenant Terry Clark, Yorkshire’s last surviving Battle of Britain veteran, was a guest of honour at yesterday’s opening. He said the maze was a “wonderful idea as a tribute to the aircrews”.
Mr Clarke, 91, of Wheldrake, also said it was “fitting that it can be seen from the air”.
Mr Pearcy said: “I’m delighted to be able to make my contribution to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and to pay tribute to the brave airmen that helped keep this country safe.”
Forces staff and families will be offered discounted admission to the maze. Next to the Spitfire is a giant Union Flag with the words Never Forget 1940-2010.
In total, the pathways of the maze are 10km long, making it the largest maize maze in Europe. It opens to the public next Saturday and will be open every day until September.
