ANGLING duo Wayne Rees and Luke Church were runaway winners of round six of the British Carp Championship at the Poole Bridge complex in Wheldrake.

Despite difficult conditions, with carp more interested in spawning than feeding, more than 250lb of fish were banked during the 48-hour contest.

Rees and Church netted nine fish between them for a 107lb 6oz total.

Their nearest challengers were Lewis Porter and Mark Pitchers, who netted 46lb 15oz from peg four to see off Mick Jamfrey and Barry Softley at the next peg, who weighed in with 31lb 6oz.

The latest evening match at Poppleton Lakes saw Dave Pollitt take the honours from peg 21 on the Railway Pond, where meat and cat meat at 11 metres found 81lb 2oz of carp to 6lb.

Lee Myers took second place from peg 15 on the same pond with 76lb 2oz, seeing off the challenge of Barry Stanley, who netted a level 58lb from peg 11.

After his second place last time out, Roger Holmes scored a narrow win at Langwith Lakes on Sunday after wrestling with the pole fishing pellet to the island at peg two on Anya’s Lake for a haul of 103lb 3oz.

He took carp to 3lb, as did runner-up Tim Bell, another venue regular, who used pellet in the margins at Anya’s peg 21 to come close with 101lb 4oz.

In the low, clear conditions on the Ouse at Poppleton and Killingbeck the bream failed to show for the Leeds Summer League.

It was left to skimmers and hybrids to make up Ian Daley’s winning net in the 44-peg contest.

Drawn just above the wires at Poppleton, Daley offered maggot at ten metres and found fish from the start. However, his final 10lb net held nothing over 8oz.

Downstream of Killingbeck, Scott Lister offered worm and maggot on the feeder cast well across for his second-placed 9lb of skimmers, perch and eels.

The West Haddersley length of the Aire was an unknown quantity for Sunday’s Walt Leary Memorial.

Gales and water skiers contributed to a disappointing result as Noel Speight needed only 6lb 1oz to win.

Using a small feeder with maggot, caster and worm, Speight netted a skimmer and eight eels, the final one proving crucial in the last minute of the match.

Paul Bennet had victory snatched from his grasp at peg 220, where he managed to use the pole at ten metres to take 30 skimmers for a 5lb 12oz finish.

The latest Shepherd AC match on the Ouse at Beningbrough Above went to Mick Crowl with a 5lb 2oz net of perch and roach on maggot feeder from above the village sand bed.

John Sturdy took second from the end below the stones. He had perch to 1lb 9oz in his 4lb 13oz net.
