A MAN from the York area has been charged with committing an armed robbery at a bank 25 years ago.

More than £7,000 was stolen when three men raided the Lloyds bank in Cromford, Derbyshire, on September 18, 1985.

They hit the 61-year-old security guard in the face with a shotgun, leaving him with injuries to his face, and then made off with the cash.

The men left the scene in a Ford Escort, which was later found abandoned in Belper.

Derbyshire Police said a 58-year-old man arrested in York on March 25 has been charged with robbery, wounding with intent and possession of an imitation firearm with intent.

He will appear before magistrates in Chesterfield on August 2.
