YOU would never have thought Bloc Party started out as an alternative outfit.

Lead singer Kele Okereke’s debut solo album has developed the dance theme that marked his band’s later work – and would have a rightful audience on any club night.

It’s pretty hardcore at times, which rules out anyone who is not a purist – including me – but you can’t fault its authenticity. Or the effort.

Produced with XXXchange, there are electronic, glam and even funk influences throughout this ten-tracker.

The single, Tenderoni, is a classic example of this dance theme.A club beat, the type you’ve heard on a hundred dancefloors, dominates an understated vocal and fires into a massive chorus.

You’re listening to the music, rather than the lyrics. And that will appeal to many, but by no means all.
