WHAT we do is what we do, it’s all the same, there’s nothing new, sings Mark Mothersbaugh, and while he may be using irony, it’s true.

Devo are back after an absence of 20 years; the signature mechanized swing with spiky, angular guitars is still there and the deranged vocals take you straight back to the halcyon days of de-evolution. So does the angst.

“Thirty years ago, people said that we were cynical, that we had a bad attitude,” says Mark.

“But now, when you ask people if de-evolution is real, they understand that there was something to what we were saying.”

The album features the classic line-up of Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh with Gerald and Bob Casale who have picked up their unfinished business where they left off, along with their trademark boiler suits.

It’s kitsch and thought-provoking but is it really something for everybody? Not quite, but Devo fans will love it.
