DOZENS of bags of rubbish dumped behind houses in one of the most heavily student-occupied roads in York have outraged residents.

Pensioner George Bradley has lived in Siward Street, off Hull Road, for 45 years, and said the amount of rubbish this week was worse than he had ever seen.

Mr Bradley said: “It’s absolutely disgusting. The council sent a small van, but there was so much they couldn’t fit it all in. They had to wait for a bigger van to come get the bulk of it.

“They got rid of it all on Monday, but first thing Tuesday morning there was already some more thrown into the lane.”

In March, The Press reported that 29 of the 50 properties on Siward Street were occupied by students, and Mr Bradley said he was disappointed at the state the street was often left in.

He said: “Every year it’s the same, they throw it all out because they don’t want to take anything with them. A lot of it is recyclable material, clothes, papers, books, all going to landfill.

“I have never known it as bad as this before. Every year more and more houses go to students, and every year it gets worse. It makes me disgusted to see what they throw out.”

Irene Linfoot is a resident of nearby Barstow Avenue, where plans to transform another home into student accommodation were this week refused by the council.

She said: “We’re just round the corner from Siward Street, and we have always seen rubbish piled up in the back lane. They’re like that before the students have even gone home, but obviously it’s worse when they’re leaving at the end of term.”
