OVERWEIGHT youngsters in York are being given the chance to fight the flab during the summer holidays.

City of York Council will be running an exercise and nutrition camp, the first of its kind in the city, called Keep Active for children aged between eight and 13.

It will be held at the Energise leisure centre in Cornlands Road, in Acomb, between August 2 and 6 and August 9 and 13, with youngsters being able to take part in activities including swimming, archery, climbing, water polo and sea scooter-riding at a cost of £55 a week.

The camps will also offer advice and information on different foods and how packaging should be read to assess how healthy they are, as well as opportunities to find out more about various ingredients and preparing your own lunch. The final day of each camp will involve a presentation where children will receive a pedometer, activities pack and certificate for completing the course.
