MORE than £1m has been cut from education budgets in York and North Yorkshire as part of the Government’s schools announcements.

The city and county education authorities were allocated £8m cash each to prepare for the introduction of diplomas, but are now among 76 councils which will each lose £660,000 in immediate cuts, saving £50m.

A further £170m was cut from capital spending, as Education Secretary Michael Gove cancelled the £55bn Building Schools for the Future Programme – but the details were not revealed in the Commons.

The BSF announcement has been condemned as a fiasco, after a list of school rebuilding schemes going ahead turned out to be riddled with errors, and Mr Gove was forced to apologise to MPs.

Coun Carol Runciman, executive member for children and young people’s services at City of York Council, said: “I haven’t had chance to look at the implications of this but I do think it’s important that any announcements are checked carefully and that there continues to be investment in diplomas which have been very successful across the city.”
