YORK’S response to severe winter weather could be improved if councillors agree new plans at a meeting later this month.
Following the extreme weather in December and January, City of York Council carried out a review of its winter maintenance response.
On July 20, the ruling executive will be asked to approve:
• Extending the network of roads that are always gritted during wintry weather.
• Clearing and treating secondary link routes in extreme weather.
• Distributing salt bags to key locations in severe weather to supplement salt bin stocks.
• Extending the treatment of footpaths to include parts of Bishopthorpe Road and Acomb Front Street.
• Using special maintenance vehicles to clear and treat major off-road cycle routes.
• Setting up a winter maintenance group to co-ordinate the council’s response to severe weather.
• Providing 24/7 customer contact service for residents and businesses in severe weather conditions.
