ARTHRITIS patients in York are to be involved in a clinical trial which it is hoped will lead to a breakthrough in treatment of the crippling condition.
Patients in York are being recruited now to join fellow sufferers from Leeds and Bradford who will undergo a new kind of treatment which tackles arthritis intensively at an early stage of the illness.
The 200-patient trial has been funded with more than £515,000 from Arthritis UK.
Dr Philip Helliwell, one of the researchers leading the trial, said: “We think that a tighter, more aggressive treatment of psoriatic arthritis, in which patients are given escalating dosages of drugs if their condition is not responding, and see a specialist every month with the aim of controlling their symptoms fully and as soon as possible, will result in a good outcome after 12 months.”
