POLICE are urging a vital witness to come forward following two crashes on the A1 near Harrogate.

The second accident took place when the driver of a black Renault Clio swerved to avoid hitting debris from the first accident and collided with a red Toyota Yaris.

The impact caused the Clio to overturn and the Yaris to hit the central reservation.

A 51-year-old woman from Buxton, who was a passenger in the Clio, was taken to Harrogate Hospital by ambulance to be treated for minor arm injuries.

This collision happened shortly after 1.50pm on Saturday on the southbound carriageway of the A1, about 400 metres south of junction 48.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “It is thought that the debris was the bumper of a black Vauxhall Astra that was travelling on the northbound carriageway and hit the central reservation just prior to the collision involving the Clio and Yaris.

“Police would like to speak with the driver and passengers of a blue Peugeot that was travelling northbound and may have seen the manner of driving of the Astra prior to the incident.”

Anyone who witnessed either incident or can assist the investigation is asked to contact Traffic Constable Andy Macleod on 0845 60 60 24 7.
