THE University of York said it is working with police and the City of York Council following complaints of parked cars blocking footpaths in Heslington.

Heslington resident, David Pearcy contacted The Press to say visitors to the campus were parking on the pavement along University Road, often making it impossible for mothers with prams to pass.

He said: “The traffic wardens can’t do anything because there are no double yellow lines.

“Cars are parked half on the road and half on the path with some completely blocking the footpath – forcing people to walk on the road. It’s a busy road and on a bus route.

“They (the University) have been building too much on their car parks and are passing the problem on to the council.”

A spokesman for University of York said staff were working with police and the council to make sure everyone complied with parking rules.

He said: “Parking on campus has been temporarily reconfigured during refurbishment work to Campus South car park. Alternative parking has been provided including 100 spaces at Heslington East served by a free shuttle bus service link to Heslington West. Staff have also been reminded about the alternative modes of transport available.

“We have made City of York Council, which has statutory responsibility for enforcing on-street parking regulations, aware of the issue. We are also informing the police of any cars causing an obstruction on roads adjoining campus.”

A spokesman for City of York Council confirmed they were working with the university and had received a number of complaints about parking on footpaths in the area.

North Yorkshire Police reminded people visiting the university that it was an offence to cause an obstruction and said officers had issued tickets along University Road.
