Selby and East Yorkshire are set for a welcome jobs boost after plans were announced to recruit at least 30 new carers in the area.

The news follows the expansion of Caremark, a national company providing home-based personal care to people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and terminal illnesses, as well as the elderly.

The organisation has set up a new base in Hessle, near Hull, under the franchise Caremark East Yorkshire and is looking to recruit 200 staff across Selby and the East Riding. At least 30 of the jobs will be in Selby and another 30 will be in the area covering Stamford Bridge, Pocklington and Market Weighton. Further posts will also be created in Bridlington and Goole.

Former nurse Karen Precious, who has set up the franchise, said: “We are experiencing a tremendous demand and we urgently need to recruit high-quality staff to deliver a range of care services. We provide full training, so experience is not critical, but being a caring and considerate person is. We currently have 32 staff, but we expect to be employing an extra 200 people within 12 months and that figure is almost certain to rise substantially as the business grows.”

The latest available figures show 1,593 people in Selby claimed Jobseekers’ Allowance in May.

Coun Mark Crane, leader of Selby District Council, said: “In the current economic climate any new jobs are good news and certainly 30 new ones in the Selby area are really good news.”
