There are some weird and wonderful bicycle contraptions around York at the moment and there are some that are downright dangerous and utterly lethal.

The lethal are what I term “babes in a bag” – basically a nylon bag on wheels attached to a bicycle and usually carrying two small children inches from the ground.

The riders of these contraptions usually resemble the mother-earth type of lady, all good intentions I am sure and very green in more ways than one.

These machines may look okay travelling along a grassy track in rural Vietnam, but on the streets of York they are a disaster waiting to happen.

Apart from the obvious fragility of the children being carried in them they are at the same level as vehicle exhausts, which is absolute lunacy.

The dangerous contraptions I refer to are a half children’s bicycle attached to an adult’s bike and towed along. Several I have seen around York with children on the rear are leaning over into the road at a ten degree angle, the connecting link to the main bike obviously very worn.

This not only looks very uncomfortable for the children, but if the link broke the child could be under a bus or other vehicle.
