University of York degree graduation ceremonies - Day 1

Director Ken Loach, who made Kes and The Wind That Shakes The Barley, is among the 11 people accepting honorary degrees at University of York ceremonies today, tomorrow and Friday.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will also be honoured at the ceremony, along with Anthony Horowitz, creator of Foyle’s War, and the Honorable Mr Justice Albie Sachs, who was appointed to the South African court by Nelson Mandela and helped prepare the democratic constitution of the country in the early 1990s.

Other recipients of honorary degrees are historian Professor Dame Janet Nelson, Professor Carol Robinson, former university registrar David Foster, science communicator Professor Averil MacDonald, leading Liberal Democrat Lord Navnit Dholakia, geneticist Professor John Bell and businessman Sir William Castell, who chairs the Wellcome Trust.

One of the students receiving a degree, in ecology, conservation and the environment, is 22-year-old Stacy Clark, who had just completed her second year when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Stacy split her time between the university and her mother’s side in Cumbria as she underwent extensive treatment.

When the treatment caused Stacy’s mother to lose her hair, Stacy offered to shave her head. Stacy’s friend Jennie Harvey, a fellow biology student, also agreed to do it along with three friends in Cumbria, raising £3,000 for cancer research.

Stacy’s mum faces another year of treatment, but is well enough to attend her daughter’s graduation.
