FRIENDS and colleagues of a former Spitfire pilot and senior librarian who has died will have a chance to remember him at a special church service in York tomorrow.

The Press reported earlier this week how York-born Maurice Smith, formerly of Osbaldwick and a former reference librarian at York Central Library, had died aged 87 after suffering from motor neurone disease.

His funeral takes place at noon tomorrow at All Saints’ Church, in Hopton, Suffolk. But a parishioner at St Lawrence’s Church in Lawrence Street, York, where Mr Smith was a warden from 1966 until the early 2000s, has revealed a service will take place there simultaneously.

Ann Dickson said the service would be conducted by Father Tim Jones for people unable to travel down to Suffolk.

She said donations would be requested for the Motor Neurone Disease Society.
