In the last month we have seen increasing ineptitude from the new coalition Government – it has got education data wrong and is also forcing segregation and academic selection on the poor.

There are two schools in York, Archbishop Holgate and Manor C of E, looking to be turned into academies which are already outstanding – meaning they will in the long run cream the best of York pupils off the top of the comprehensive system, thus effectively undermining it.

A truly comprehensive style of education, where all abilities are included in the classroom, means that rather than forced segregation everyone is brought together to learn academically and, more importantly, socially. The removal of barriers to segregation along economic, social and academic ability lines is wrong and should be fought until the Government realises what the consequences of it’s regressive policy are.

We must also remember what Vince Cable said before the election. He was “utterly opposed to selection”, yet his party and himself have forsaken principle for power as the Lib Dems are supporting the Academies Bill.
