As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain we should never forget the sacrifice of Bomber Command.
It flew its first operation on September 3, 1939, and its last on May 3, 1945.
Churchill stated: “The fighters can save us from defeat, only the bombers can bring us victory.”
Bomber Command and its great leader were totally ignored at the end of the war.
Fighter Command has its Battle of Britain Day, but no individual day stands out to commemorate Bomber Command’s sacrifice and ultimate victory.
But perhaps March 31, 1944, the night on which 95 aircraft were lost and on which Bomber Command lost more men than Fighter Command did in the whole of the Battle of Britain, would be suitable date to remember the 55,500 men of Bomber Command?
