While the council parks department cancelled the Rowntree Park annual birthday celebration last weekend for fear of strong winds, Monday’s Press was full of pictures of the Dragon Boat Race on the River Ouse and the York Mystery Plays in glorious sunshine that same day.

Did someone look at the wrong forecast and if not, how come the organisers of the other events did not have a problem? Health and safety is important, but surely forecast light wind gusts should not mean you have to cancel the whole event? Coun Andy D’Agorne, Green Party, Broadway West, York.

• Dave Meigh, head of parks and open spaces at City of York Council, said: “The Rowntree Park event was unfortunately cancelled the morning it was due to take place, due to unusually high winds forecast that afternoon. Over 50 gazebos were to be erected for the occasion and there would have been a high risk that these could collapse or take off. Managing the safety of visitors attending the event was of utmost importance to us, which is why this decision was made. I take no joy from this decision given how much the community value the event, and how much the Rangers and friends put into the event beforehand. As with any cancellation, we will review the decision and see what we can learn and plan for the future. We will be putting up notices in the park and writing to all stallholders and performers explaining the background to the decision.”
