High-flying pupils from York primary schools took part in a tense spelling final.
The youngsters from Westfield Primary Community School, Hob Moor Junior School and Woodthorpe Primary School got some tricky words – including “claustrophobic” and “arachnophobia”.
In recent months, children have taken part in class heats and special assemblies to select two star spellers from each school. During the final, at York High School, attended by Lord Mayor Sue Galloway, the competition went to “sudden death”. The winners were from Hob Moor and Woodthorpe.
James McGann, a teacher at Westfield school, said: “It really raised the profile of spelling, and it was interesting because football competitions and things like that are quite cool, whereas something like this never had that profile, so the children who are good at spelling have had some credit from their peers."
