A NEW interactive DVD developed by the University of York has given a glimpse of how iconic churches would have looked hundreds of years ago.

The English Parish Church Through The Centuries interactive DVD was launched by the Archbishop of Canterbury in York, and uses 3D technology to create interactive models of dozens of churches.

Users can explore the interiors and exteriors of churches as they would have existed hundreds of years ago, including Holy Trinity in Micklegate, which was once part of a huge priory run by Benedictine monks.

Dr Dee Dyas, director of christianity and culture at the university, said churches shaped the country and are filled with history.

“Parish churches are not only treasure houses of astonishingly beautiful art and architecture; they are also storybooks with the experiences and memories of individuals and communities inscribed on their walls,” she said.

“They still stand at the physical and spiritual heart of many communities and welcome a host of visitors each year, offering people from all backgrounds a doorway into countless areas of heritage and culture.”

The DVD is available from the university for £17.50, or from york.ac.uk/projects/christianityandculture
