CITY of York Council is investigating the reasons for rising numbers of children going into council care, which was highlighted in its year end accounts.
The children and young people’s service revealed it had overspent on its 2009 to 2010 budget by more than £1.8 million at a learning and culture overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Tuesday.
The department’s year-end service planning and financial report showed a 35 per cent increase in the number of “looked-after children” the council is responsible for, with no accompanying increase in budget.
The report said the directorate had managed to keep the increase in cost lower than the 35 per cent by increasing its local fostering programme. School transport budgets also overspent by £341,000, despite hopes that savings would arise from a transport review by consultancy firm NKA.
