A GERMAN lorry driver has appeared in court charged with dangerous driving following a pile-up on the A64.

Michael Burkert, 39, of Zum Heilbach, in Bad Berleburg, Germany, is alleged to have driven a Mercedes heavy goods vehicle into the back of a line of queuing cars at temporary traffic lights on the eastbound carriageway of the A64, near the Highwayman Café, on March 8.

At York Crown Court yesterday, he pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving and was released on bail. He has deposited a £10,000 sum as security that he will return for his trial, which was set for January 19 next year.
