York has its first public vegetable plot thanks to a green-fingered partnership between Edible York and City of York Council.
An underused plot of land on Paragon Street has been brought back to life by planting a wide range of popular vegetables.
Over the next few months the Paragon Street plot will provide passers-by with salad, kale, squash, courgettes, beans and fresh herbs.
Edible York was founded to create a network of community growing spaces across York.
Russell Stone, the council’s head of Neighbourhood Pride Services, said: “The council is keen to promote sustainability and this is a great way to develop underused pockets of land, while encouraging people to eat more fruit and vegetables.”
Chloe Smee, chair of Edible York, said: “Local residents and Edible York volunteers planted the bed and, with the help of staff from the council to water the bed, they will maintain and harvest the edible plants.”
