OVER 18s who appear to be under age are being given a helping hand to get into pubs and clubs thanks to a new scheme being rolled out in Selby.

Selby District Community Safety Partnership has introduced a free ID4U “proof of age” card to make life easier for teenagers and young adults.

Selby College have signed up to the scheme and the cards will be issued to fresher students in September.

Paul Kirkham, Selby district community safety partnership manager, said: “Buying products which carry an age restriction can be a bit of a hassle for young people.

“They have to remember to take their driving licence, passport or birth certificate and there’s always the worry that they could lose those items.

“The ID4U card means that you can prove your age at venues without the need for any other documents. It is a secure proof-of-age card scheme which carries the PASS hologram and is free to young people in the Selby district.”

There are plans to roll out the initiative across North Yorkshire.

PC Andy Patchett said: “Not only will the scheme help pubs and clubs, but it will help young people who appear younger than they are to purchase products such as video games, films, pets, lottery tickets and many other items.

“The cards are attractive to young people as they are free of charge. Similar cards can cost up to £20 and we hope that the scheme is a big success in the Selby District.”

All proof-of-age cards in the UK must incorporate the PASS (proof of age standards scheme) hologram which is the only standard recommended by ACPO, the Home Office and the Trading Standards Institute.

ID4U application forms are available in all police stations and libraries in the district.

Cards can also be obtained by appointment. Phone 01757 241038 for more information.
