GIRL Guides have been burying messages for future generations at a housing development near Selby.

To celebrate 100 years of Girl Guiding, members of Sherburn-in-Elmet Brownies, Rainbows and Guides aged from five to 14 hid a time capsule in an area of open space at Saxon Court, in Sherburn-in-Elmet. It means they get to tick off one more of the challenges they must complete in a bid to score 100 points and earn an Adventure 100 badge.

Guide leader Alison Wadsworth said: “The Girl Guiding organisation will celebrate its birthday in October with lots of events taking place in the year leading up to the anniversary. The Adventure 100 badge encourages members to take part in a wide range of activities from climbing mountains to learning to dance; and from ice-skating to making a video.

“Planning a time capsule, deciding what to put in it and arranging for it to be buried is just one of the many things our girls have been doing.

“The challenge is divided into ten sections and the time capsule ticks a number of boxes as it encourages the girls to share the adventure and look to the future.”

Anyone who finds the capsule at the development in the future will have an insight into the life as it is lived today, as each member has included pictures of themselves, a note explaining why they have buried it, a local newspaper and badges among other items.

The housing development, by Redrow Homes, includes the company’s new Heritage Collection of houses.

Patsy Aicken, sales manager for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), said: “We could think of no better way to commemorate the Heritage Collection than by helping the local Guides, Brownies and Rainbows celebrate their centenary by inviting them to bury their time capsule at Saxon Court.”
