ONE sees City of York Council congratulating its residents on how well they are reducing household waste going to the landfill tip, therefore reducing the amount council has to pay government for sending waste to landfill.
However, councils including York are always writing and complaining that they are running out of holes in the ground to put the waste in.
This is not true. There are plenty of areas in the surrounding area of York where waste has been taken out of the ground for use, such as road maintenance, these can be used to take household waste.
Households can only recycle so much rubbish, and will just have to travel further on to landfill tips.
Another alternative is to build an incinerator to burn rubbish. This could provide heating to houses in York.
