A FATHER and daughter had a lucky escape when fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom of their Haxby home.

They managed to escape the property unharmed after being alerted by a smoke alarm fitted by firefighters two years ago as part of a safety campaign by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Two crews arrived in Oaken Grove shortly after 11am today to tackle the blaze, which was contained to the bedroom.

Group manager Graham Buckle said: “The occupier did exactly the right thing by shutting the door to the bedroom.

“If he hadn’t done that then the whole floor would have been severely damaged.”

He said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, but it was not thought to be suspicious.
