ROMAN soldiers are set to kick-start this year’s Jane Tomlinson York 10K when thousands of runners will pound the streets for charity.

Six Roman soldiers from the Yorkshire Museum will be leading the 6,000 runners from the start-line on Knavesmire on Sunday, August 1.

This year’s York 10K route will take participants into the city centre via Bishopthorpe Road taking in parts of the city walls via Nunnery Lane.

Runners will then be taken past many of the cities highlights, including York Minster and Clifford’s Tower, before heading back out to the racecourse along the banks of the River Ouse.

Meanwhile, The Friends of St Nicholas Fields are offering three free places for the 10k in return for helping to raise funds for York Environment Centre.

The centre is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year is hoping to have ten runners or walkers in the 10k race.

All the money raised will help develop York Environment Centre as a hub for environmental action in York.

The centre’s racing team aims to raise at least £1,000 towards kitting out the pioneering building, located in St Nicholas Fields Nature Reserve, Tang Hall, with new interactive displays and examples of green home improvements.

Ivana Jakubkova, who manages the Environment Centre, said: “The race promises to be an incredible experience of running or walking alongside several thousand people through York streets normally bustling with traffic.

“I’ve never done a race like this before but, with some trepidation, I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m calling on other people like me to use the opportunity and join our team.”
