VINTAGE railway posters and other collectors’ items were on sale today as the final lots of the Malcolm Guest Railway Collection went under the hammer.

The third sale of the collection found in Mr Guest’s terraced home in Knaresborough after he died in last year started yesterday.

It will finish today with the auction of bus, coach and London transport-related posters and other collectors items.

Malcolm Ivor Guest, who was born in Devon in 1943, worked for the publicity department at Paddington Station, where he collected posters and promotional material for the Great Western Railway.

He continued to do so until his death in July 2009 and more than 2,500 original posters and a large quantity of other printed materials were found in his collection.

The earlier railway posters and memorabilia dating from the late 1920s to the 1950s were sold by auction in January of this year, and in March original artwork by Heath Robinson for the 1935 GWR Centenary Publication Railway Ribaldry was sold with other artwork in a second auction.

Auctioneers Morphets of Harrogate will sell 1,100 lots over the final auction at The Pavilions of Harrogate, including 650 lots of railway posters extolling the virtues of coastal resorts, holiday destinations and heritage sites, as well as special events posters for the Commonwealth Games, exhibitions and county shows.
